It's been a while since I've actually written something on this. lack of time, school/work getting in the way, just life as it is happening.

Another year has passed. And it has been a weird couple of months, positive and negative. And that's the one sentence that pretty much sums up my life as of late.

I haven't made my top 10 end of the year list like I do every year, I still might do it tho.
A record and band that would definetly be in there is 'THE EFFORT' with their latest effort (yes pun intended) 'Wartime Citizens'.

I met these dudes in the summer '09, having them over in my former shithouse that was apparently haunted, so said the band hahaha. I didn't see them play until august of that same summer at Ieperfest where they played most of their first LP 'Iconoclasm', which blew me away.
So now about 1,5 years later they're out with their second LP that carries on the political themed flag throughout the album. When I heard the demo/mini prior to the release I wasn't that stoked, but it turned out even better then I hoped.

They played halfway January in Belgium and invited them in my new home to stay the night and hung out with some of them together with Stephanie for the biggest part of the night strolling around Ghent.

I remember Tony saying during the show in between songs, "Some people consider us to be a way too political band...'. I believe there aren't enough political bands around and support how they stand their ground on the topics theysing about and would like to see changed in their country and the rest of the world.

Looking at my point of view, this past thursday my 'country', Belgium has been celebrating the fact that we are now officially world champions because we broke the worldrecord in forming a government (you should know that this is the 3rd year in a row they tried to form a government, and we yet again failed), which was 249 days by former champion Iraq.
I must say I liked the idea, an ironic message to our country's politicians but the way it turned out was more like going to the 10 day Ghent festival, people getting together and getting out of their mind wasted as fuck as if it was just one big joke, one big party.
First world problems.

If you only look at the state of the world today, we've got the whole of Northern Africa and the Middle East rising up against their government after Tunesia and Egypt were revolting for weeks causing the fall of their current government/dictatorships.
Now we have unarmed people dying in Libya, Bahrein, Yemen, Iran, Algeria... because they want Change
The number of casualties in Libya has risen to over 200 killed and 900 wounded. "Ninety percent of these gunshot wounds [were] mainly in the head, the neck, the chest, mainly in the heart" Benghazi doctor quote through BBC

This is just way beyond every way of rational thinking.
People are actually dying or even risking the fact that they might get shot because of the fact they want CHANGE, they want a government/leader that doesn't fill his pockets off of their suffering, they want what every human being wants, equal rights, healthcare, education for their children, a stable country, a job, a future.
This is exactly what the people of Belgium want although our problems are more of a luxury problem than the fight for basic human rights. And how do we 'revolt'? Joining a fucking herd that went beyond 10.000 in crowds and celebrating the fact we are world champions and getting shitfaced.

The risks the Belgian people faced to do this: paying a 60 euro fine if you were caught peeing in public and not using the proper facilities the city council had issued for the event.
yes you read that correct, the city council supported the event 100% (thinking off all the news coverage they would receive of course).

My sympathies and respect for the Arab people grow each day, yet so does my disgust for my own country(men).

who ever is even reading this if you're into hardcore punk, or even if you're not, check out this band and their latest record, if you don't like the music, al least read their lyrics.
Do yourself a favour, educate yourself, raise awareness, be a catalyst for change. Make an effort.

my buddy Fredo just hooked me up with the footage he shot at Ieperfest, this is one of the results, amazing
seeing this makes takes me back and makes all the bullshit worthwhile. I just wish I had more time to spend with friends you only get to see one's a year.

This years Ieper was really intense, most of worked about 20 hours per day for about a week straight and who knows how much more weeks before and after. It's been the third year we've been working with the same steady crew and it has grown on us. We have our differences but we know who's capable for what job and who is the right dude for the other.
I love working for Ieper because to put it in a simple way, we're never content with what we do each year. Whatever flaw we find has to be gone by the next and so on and on. We strive to get the job done as good as we can and give it a full 100%.
some will never know.
(especially the douchebags who trash the campingsite year after year)

but, you choose you lose.
I had my first re-examination 2 days after the fest, considering I hadn't had a decent sleep in weeks and working at the restaurant again I failed all 5 of them, which kinda blows but since I can take 'em up in my second year it's all fine and fucking dandy.

so the past few weeks have been a mental rollercoaster ride, with some highs and some remarkable lows.

Yesterday I had learned through the newspaper and some calls to friends that 3 guys I used to be in high school with crashed their car into a fucking tree, killing them all on impact. I knew JP who was driving the car pretty well, he used to sing and play guitar in one of the first little bands I went to see and of whom I bought my first demo.

I have survived 10 days of working and partying in a row at the Ghent festival and suffering from a fucked up bio rhythm.
Ieper is happening in 2 weeks and I still have tons to do on my end.
The big Marquee stage tent is being delivered coming saturday (07/08) and we could use all help we can get to set it up, if you're around hit me up.

I'm missing Converge's Belgian clubshow tonight due to work and hungover collegues. FML.
Second chance finals are happening in just under 3 weeks so I need to get my shit together. ASAP.

In exactly one month my life will go back to normal... whatever the fuck that ever meant.

I've been awake for about 12 hours having a short night sleep after returning from Groezrock which was friday and saturday.
I'm tired like a motherfucker trying to fall back asleep and sleep for 2 months straight and wake up halfway june to get down with the good times.

this weekend wasn't.
I mean I can't complain you know, free entrance and all, selling records and merch, I've chosen do this and it has his up sides to it but definetly a lot of down sides. I don't wanna come off like a total prick, which I pretty much was this weekend.

Groezrock is the biggest fucking circus you have in punk/hc, what the fuck, have I been crushed by a rock which I enjoyed so much that I just stayed under it for the past few months and missed out on all the 'essentials'??

First off all what got me pissed is traffic, besides hating everything that isn't a bike and is used for transport, are traffic jams, the ones around Antwerp being the most notorious, so I'm sitting in the van getting more ticked off by the minute.
we arrive, reaching the same check in point like last year, dude tells me I'm way wrong and I should go somewhere else, to the main entrance, I start discussing with him, I got all my shit where we were standing now last year and it was indicated on the given map. So main entrance it was, cars weren't allowed to drive any further so I had to run the whole way, motherfuckers. The guest office at the main entrance is packed with people trying to get in, whether it's legit or not, whatever I wanted my fucking wristbands already and get to work being late as it was. There's some dude causing ruckus who I reckognize to be Rob whatever the fuck his last name is, former tourmanager of some metal tour on last years Ieperfest, who can't get in cause he's not on the list, but he's carrying some band's merch with him etc etc. People were fucking screaming and shouting and I'm about to lose my shit and I try to calm 'em down and start talking to the lady who looked like the avarage soccer mom who has never dealt with a pissed off metaldude yelling at her so close to her face she almost passed out because of his bad breath. I tell her she needs to call who ever knows what's up and get in contact with said band that is involved. end of story, end of drama. fuck you, worst fucking organisation ever.
I get my wristband, I don't get the others because they have to pick 'em up personally, that very moment I regret the fact that I helped her out with bad breath Rob trying to beat her up and that I should've let him and I'm imagining myself pulling out every teeth in her fucking mouth with the pincers she just used to clamb my wrist band URGH
So I run back to our van, get my buddies Olivier and Lucas to the entrance get the wristbands,run the whole way back and drive towards the merch parkinglot
At last some familiar faces who are even kind enough to help us load out and set up our shit.

Fridaynight was kinda lame, I have no idea what was playing, I probably wouldn't have cared anyways, Lucas was bummed he couldn't fight both of our boredom by intoxicating himself due to the failure of finding cheap gwhiskey, douche.
So friday ended quite faster then we thought it would and we prepared some posters to do a Ieperfest promorun the next morning all over the festival grounds.

We used said posters, layed them on the ground, put the merch we were selling on top and trying to get some sleep. Try to get some sleep and watch some drunk shithead fuck it up, the cold was pretty bad too. freeeeezing like a mother-fuckeeeer.

Saturday, for the first time in 5 years I kinda remembered how it feels to wake up hungover, sans the booze.
worst fucking humour.
Poster-run in the sunshine got me back on my feet though.
To many ignorant people with a bad taste in music.
I don't claim to be the music encyclopedia but I've got a fair idea of what's round-out good and what is bad..

During the day I saw what was the last minute or so of Defeater's last song. great band, hands down, to give me goosebumps under 60 seconds, way-to-go!

Rise and Fall played an awesome set and killed it, fuck been awhile I saw them this good, got rid of the shit in my pockets and decided to let go of my frustrations by jumping on some people's heads. worked out pretty well I must say.

We finally got it going behind the distro table, Lucas actually sold his lame-ass BMTH hoodie for a lousy 7 euros (he could've asked the bitch for 20 and she would've payed it, you dumb shit) to buy beer.

As of late, I'm finding my way through out hiphop music, some of the older stuff, that was released in the nineties/beginning of 2000. While cleaning Bruno's house whilst he was moving we found an impressive amount of old hip hop vinyl collecting dust. This has put me on track in digging some stuff up and playing some cool tunes.

The past 2 weeks I've had Easter holidays off from school and been pretty much working all the freaking time, but it's been good none the less. We had sunny days for 2 weeks so I'm not complaining.

Went on a roadtrip to the Roman-Gaul museum with these fuckers:

Needless to say we had a awesome time hanging out, really looking forward to do some crazy shit with them again.

Last Monday we also had the Swedisch band EF playing. They have been on tour before with Red Sparrows, so if you're down with that you'll like them. EF has taken me by suprise by filling I think 75 minutes or longer with some very original music- and instruments and yet I kept interested.. Currently still on tour in Europe so catch them somewhere if you can, dates are on the myspace which is linked above!
The thing about that day that was pretty funny was the fact the band was staying over at my place. They arrived around 2.15 pm and without me or them knowing the store around the corner was robbed, where after the employees were able to follow the robber, who ran into our street. Since the band was almost loading out I left the door open. (supposedly he ran into our house and ran across the roof..) Before we knew it there were 4 patrolcars stopping in the street having us as possible suspects. To make a long story short, we had our house fully searched since they thought he ran into our house and were later no longer suspected of sheltering or being the dude who did it, since we weren't wearing and make-up and carrying a large butchers knive, I suppose it was pretty clear we weren't hahaha. so yeah another day on the block.

Other days were spent roaming and riding the streets, 'urban' exploring if you will, cause really, I've been hanging around Ghent for a few years now but there's some places that are yet to be discovered by me...

So apart from what's been up here, let's take a look at the world.
Despite the fact I realize a lot of people are so bummed about this and the economy is losing fortunes every day, it's pretty funny how some volcano no one has ever heard of is capable of causing so many chaos in Western Europe and in some other parts of the world.
Maybe you don't find it funny at all, perhaps my mate Micha doesn't find it funny cause he's stuck in Moscow for an unknown amount of time or it doesn't matter to him for all I know. I in some way don't find it funny that my collegues are stuck overseas on holidays so I now have to fill in for them.

The fact is that we members of the human race consider ourselves supreme to every other known species living on this planet, but time has shown us and will continue to do so, we can not get a grip on our planet.
We may try to contribute in doing our little part to save this world from total fucking destruction, but we are still guided by the Earth we live on, not the other way around.
So yes, I think it's funny, that some ash cloud all those miles away is able to put all air traffic to a halt in Western Europe, and we as a people are left motionless, not able to do a single thing about it.

I hate how all electronic devices have an unofficial expiration date which makes you buy shit over and over. Cell phones breaking down, laptop barely functioning and now my Ipod's doesn't play stereo sound anymore...

I love how the weather here has changed so abrubtly from sub-zero temperatures to sun filled days and temperatures upto 18 degrees
Spring and summer have officially arrived and I'm loving every bit of it, I've been riding out as much as possible. loving life
next week it's easter holiday and we'll be in for the chill

Summer also means cool shows and fests.
Break Even will be playing a show in Belgium on may 14 at the seaside, siked to see these guys play. They'll be releasing their full lenght, 'The Bright Side' on vinyl on Anchors Aweigh Records in april. get into it

I'll never look at winter the same again since I've spent it in the shithouse I'm in now. It's been about a year since I've moved here and last years winter wasn't that cold and long like this years. First thing you need to know about me, I fucking hate snow, it's wet and cold and besides the ability to throw it in somebody's face there's nothing 'cool' about it.
I'm lucky I haven't chrashed my face and knees into the city streets because of the ice, thats my second, I hate ice
I'd rather be trapped under ice than above, when you're under you are at least ovrwhelmed by cold making you numb to everything else. Slight downside is that you'll probably suffer from hypothermia and freeze to a sudden death, ace plan.

Over the winter something in our roof must've broken due to minus 0 temparatures, cause by now all snow and ice is melting down and is seeping it's way through the roof in the kitchen and bathroom, seriously fuck this house and fuck my cheap ass landlord.

So I've been here for about a year, moving in with Micha and Jean.
Since then a lot has changed for me and I feel a different person. I never took to much for granted in the past, or at least so I taught. When I left home last year I was 20, being a college dropout without a relevant education or anything that makes me stand out to be picked over someone else for functions I figured I could apply for. After struggling for a few months, thinking over and retracing my steps I rised above all of it, got me a part time job in a vegetarian restaurant and going back to college in order to persue my original goal from nearly 3 years ago, graduate a English - History highschool teacher. I passed 5 of my finals and failed 2. which is for being me quite an achievement.

2 years ago I had a life figured out for me, I just had to study and care about nothing else, still I failed all of my finals. This time it's all on my shoulders and I'm working/studying and I'm actually getting good grades...

Life's giving me a peek on how the bright side looks like cause I'm getting my scholarship after all, so lots of sleepness nights and working overtime have paid off.

right now I am yet again at the point of reading what I wrote and deleting every word I've written, cause really who cares... I care and it felt good to get this off my chest
my goal for 2010 is trying to do a band, and get things off my chest in another more musically, lyrical way and stop littering the internetz with crap like this

Besides all this stuff going down, I'm just living life, taking it in and try to make the most of it. I do have some things bugging me but I've learned to deal with them or getting them out of my way. Life is cold but good. Ieperfest winteredition went quite well although I really didn't wanna show up, it was a good night without too much bullshit, looking forward to the summeredition halfway august.

Hopeless - Dear World

-This has been one of my favorite Australian releases of this year, really like how this turned out. Fan ,both music and lyricwise.

BLKOUT - Total Depravity
-About halfway through the year this record was definetly ranking number one. Haven't always been a fan of this style of hardcore, so I'm not gonna write anything down of I don't know what I'm talking about. Great artwork, great tunes, I moshed

Amenra - Afterlife EP
-Whole new angel from Amenra, an EP with 3 new accoustic songs (and those same 3 played backwards, not on the vinyl tho?). Next to their usual repertoire of heavy dark sludge, some of their best stuff to date.(Listening to this however won't totally get you down if you're already having a rough day like their usual stuff does to me)

Rise & Fall - Our Circle Is Vicious
-Howetown shredders, later more on this
not such a fan of the artwork.

Bon Iver - Blood Bank
-Probably the best thing I've encounterd since a long time, this band... hear it to understand it, big fan of Vernon's work

Volcano Choir - Unmap
-Impulsive buy on 12-31-09, I do this every year on the last day of the year, go out and buy a record. This time I found this with a sticker added "Featering Bon Iver's Justin Vernon". sneaked into my top 10 last last minute!

Dead Man's Bones - s/t
-Call me a wuss if you like, I watched The Notebook in 2009 and absolutely loved it, great book as well. The dude with the beard known as Noah Calhoun in the movie and in daily life Ryan Gosling has a band, this is it. If you're into Bon Iver, Nick Cave, then something something, this all mixed with a childrens choir, you're in for a treat!

Blacklisted - No One Deserve To Be Here More Than Me
-Without doubt one of the best hc albums of 2009, bands deciding to turn it all around and throw in something whole knew and do a good job are hard to find, in this case, look no further. Lyricwise, I don't think I know any better writer than George who can pull things off like this, touching to read and trying to comprehend all of it.

Mindset - Real Power 7"
-This band is gnarly. high fives
Going on tour soon with True Colors in the states!

-My foot starts tapping and my head starts shaking whenever I hear this band, rockin' out!

-I got to know his band through Kimberly, Bon Iver was playing on pukkelpop so we went together, the shiver down my spine and the almost tear in my eye, probably best non hardcore gig

Betrayed - Pressurefest Essen

-This made the trip worth it, great hanging out again, thankful for this, after all talking to Aram got me to start thinking of going back to college. which I did in the end.

Amenra - Kortijk

-I think the picture says about enough

Bat For Lashes - Accienne Belgique Brussels

-SupriseSuprise, loved Jolien her face when I old her after a 2 month secrecy I was taking her to Bat For Lashes, awesome gig, catching up with some friends, Olivier has the best stories.

The Effort - Ieperfest

-These dudes are probably some of the nicest guys I got to know last year. They stayed over at my place in July, although I had heard of their band,I never took the time to check them out, until I heard them playing at Ieper, blew my mind, fierce band with strong morals and lovely people in it, best gig of Ieper.

Trash Talk - Ieperfest

-"We've got a surprise for you guys" they told us while we helped loading out. Trash Talk was about to setup on the floor instead of the stage, mayham all around, I punched some asshole in the face and I don't even regret it, this band turns people into evil creatures with supernatural powers. hard as nails

BLKOUT/Miles Away - Cassiopeia Berlin (+Ghent)

-The show in Ghent was probably the most insane night of 2009. I have no idea how to describe it, the show was a total dud, 20 attendees, of which 3 other Australians (wtf) and still it was a blast. what happened after the show was just pure madness, mix Australians, Swiss dudes with some (shitloads) alcohol and other drunk people who just finished their summer finals and you get to see some wild shit

They set the still standing record of amount of people sleeping in the house, which is around 20-23 people. we went out for bugers and fries for breakfast and I got to ride along to the next show, I had a great time and it was awesome getting to know some of these guys a little better

Carpathian - Sunrock Heist

-Wrong fest, wrong stage, wrong crowd, best setlist plus Joy Division's Shadowplay

I've spent New Years eve at Kwinten's house together with Olivier, Ebert and Emmy
we did some cooking, some meat/vegan fondue and had too much to eat in the end.

We watched some fireworks, Ebert showed his red haired arse for the first time in 2010 to an old lady.
We went out after it, and it didn't really turn out how I expected, nevermind that, foodparty was awesome.

So, for christmas eve Micha and me decided to do some improv, which resulted in homemade hummus with some crazy ingrediënts, which we stuffed in a paprika. Besides that stuffed aubergines added with pasta and salad. life is good

this was probably the most insane show I ever went to, never the less organised with Genet records.

finding an available livingroom for them to play an hour in advance of their arrival, never thought it'd be that easy
of the 250 people who showed up at the original venue, some 150 showed up at the house, insane

the guys hadn't even left the van or a patrolcar showed up asking what the hell these 150 kids were doing in some quiet neighboorhood at 11pm. Everybody went in, the band set up. No mic, Lee even used headphones as a mic, and got rid of them after the first song when we were screaming along so loud you could here every word.
the set lasted about 15 minutes when the power went down during their last song, epic.
show was over, everybody dodged and split like nothing ever happened

It's been a while since I've updated this thing, mainly because of the fact I have no internetconnection at home at the moment, secondly because I'm back in school and off to work after. That or I'm spending time with some close friends or that one special friend. Once I get back on track I'll try and write some more about what happened in these past few weeks or what I still remember.

A couple of weeks back Sofi starts talking to me about this building within the greater Ghent area that is currently under construction and is stripped down to just basically the walls, plumbing, electricity, stairs etc.

The buidling is about 20 stories high, which is pretty high for our city. So she heard from her friends that the door to the roof was unlocked, so we decided to check it out, it was a clear and warm sunday night that we drove up to it and started climbing.

I was pretty impressed when we ended up on the roof, I know this city practically by heart, so seeing it from another perspective was pretty rad. So I grabbed my camera and tried to take some pictures, when I realised I forgot my memorycard in my laptop so I ended up taking all of these with my cell phone. Guess I have an excuses to go back and take some decent pictures.

Every year around the end of june and beginning of july, all the crazy shit tends to happen, a lot of shit happened, good and bad

I kinda neglected this thing for the past few weeks, everything started on june 16 and it pretty much ended on july 7-8.

In the past few weeks, I have met some really legit people and got to know some people a lot better, I could write a fucking book about these past few weeks and those people I met during that time but I won't, I rather leave this on a short good note than stretch it out.

I left for Berlin on saturday july 4th and came back on july 8. This trip has set me way back in my bankaccount but it was well worth it, every single bit, a few hundred bucks is pretty cheap for a life's lesson, ain't it. I want to thank Mandy for this, For taking me on the trip, for being more impulsive than me and going nuts every day and showing me the simple joys of life if you only look at them in the right way.

I had pretty much the best birthday ever, and I quite liked it since we were surrouned by unknowns and being totally anonymous in the big city, we had some of the best food ever and we did have the best cake ever made( you'll say: "what the fuck were they thinking?!" when you see the picture)

We spend some time hanging out with Ghent's finest: Amenra who were playing in Berlin on the 6th and the day afterwards with Rise And Fall who also played

The reason we went to Berlin was the following

me and Mandy were both bound to miss out on the 2 Belgian shows, since this tour fell together with the Miles Away tour, it was a pretty easy desicion
this show, ranks at number 1 in my top 5, a shared first place with Betrayed at Ieper last year.
Everything about this show was just right, best company, seeing new made friends again, 6 awesome bands in 1 night.

about the past 2 weeks, they've been too crazy, it seems like every year in june all the crazy and impulsive shit happens.
I've slept 4 hours max per night for the past 2 weeks, and spent a maximum of 44 hours awake, all that on a vegan diet and still standing, fuck the haters

I've seen a lot of bands and people again that I hadn't seen in a while so it's been a great ride so far, pressurefest tomorrow will be ace, seeing the Betrayed dudes again

I'm flying to Berlin next week to see the Have Heart tour that is playing together on the last show of the Miles Away tour so that'll be awesome

Last week Ebert stayed over for the weekend, always good to see this dude, we got to hang big time, talked some shit or about the shit we've been or we are going through.

it's something you know it's gonna happen soon(ish) but when you hear it is in fact happening by the end of the year, I tend to get 'a little' bummed out. fridaynight Days Of Betrayal played in Waarschoot, this has been the what, 3rd - 4th year in a row that they play the same venue over the easter fair in that town. the venue is called cafe metro which has a small stage and space for gigs which creates a rather nice atmosphere. It'll never be as good as 3 years ago but last night was pretty good as well, did some dives, side to sides, stomping and whatever, good times
hung out with loads of friends and other people.
Stayed the night at Eberts and joined him towards the rehearsel of his second band Integrity Lies Within. ILW is a 6piece melodic hardcore band with the straight edge as their seventh member. They've got some songs finished and I really dig it, due to the various personalities and different musictastes of all members they've created a cool blend and crossover in their music. if you're into, The Carrier, Verse, xInvictusx, Hand Of Mercy then you'll like this

-I'm working in Ghent with a company called Meyvaert. a glass engineering/construction and placement firm. I've started working since March 2 in the production unit, making museumcabinets, upcoming monday till tuesday I get to go to Calais in France to work there in the final stage of that project. The project we're working on now is in Oxford-UK and the one after that LA-USA

so that is where I might be within the next couple of months

Work has been chill but in a good steady pace at the same time, I learned a lot, met new people, got a cold which sucks.

Since march has begun, me and my housemates are finally settled in, sort off...
I've been in here the longest but I moved rooms again to the smallest room (which is by far the coolest if you ask me)

Been partying before starting off my job, been in eeklo at the 100 DAY party with Micky, Lucas, Eva, Chuwie, Eeklo kids. Been randomly clubbing in Ghent ending up at the Make-up Club which is to cool

I've been roaming these streets for days, stopping at every job-solliciting office looking for jobs ads. I've been hearing the same old lines for the past few days,
"I can't promise you anything, it's very calm these days and everybody is looking for a job"
These days nobody cares about anyone, these are the times of drought throughout the African Savanne and grasslands, every human being is fighting for his place at the drinkingpond...

I've been nomadically scavaging these streets and friends houses for food, accepting every offer to come over and help cooking dinner and joining in at the table. I went through these street numerous times looking for the cheapest places to shop, and yes these places do exist. I've been helping out several people on their chores and random stuff around the house with some warmth and good company in return

I can manage this, but for how much longer..

This is probably the worst day of the week
-in general.

There's just nothing to do on sunday, so I don't even bother leaving the house anymore. Been doing practically nothing, I mean, nothing constructive/usefull or something in that same category of words.
The only usefull thing I did today was learning how to spit and suck it back up whilst being in the shower

my feet were killing me at the end but the pay and some hot drunk chicks running around were well worth it.

tomorrow I got another job moving who knows what to who knows where in some college building in Ghent. keeping busy, not sitting around, finally some action

My story... what about yours

During some conversations that I've had with some people that I don't know quite that long, one question keeped popping up.

"How did you get into all of this, how did you get into hardcore, this live you're living now. What has gotten you into straight edge, vegetarianism" and so on.

This is my story.

I was born in Ghent in '88, and lived since then in a small town called Belzele, about 10 km away from Ghent or civilisation for all I know.

I have pretty good childhood memories about this town though, just not knowing about the bigger things this world has to offer. Growing up on the countryside was good as well, kids love the outdoors, so do/did I. Everything went quite well until the summer of 2000 after I just 'graduated' from primary school. I witnessed the death of one of my closest friends at that time. Hit and run. the person responsible for it never to be found. Other witnesses of the accident claim the driver was drunk according to his driving capabilities seen before the crash.

This was pretty much the biggest turning point in my life. In that same late summer of 2000 I got into high school, where I had a hard time adjusting to people and school. Nobody hadn't really given me the chance to mourn, the school which had no idea what happened wasn't aware of the issues I had. I almost failed my first year, forcing me to pick another school and subject. This made it even worse.

In 2001 I started out at PTI in Eeklo. I went there until I failed my year in 2004 changing schools again. These 3 years where probably the worst years of my life and I'm not even kidding.
I started hanging out with the wrong people, wrong 'friends', started drinking frequently after school, got into fights, with time I became the black sheep of my class, if the teachers weren't, then I was center of all mockery. I knew I shouldn't expect any help from teachers because if they were harrasing me they weren't harrasing them. So from then on I got into a lot of arguments and other bullshit with my teachers leading to even more bullshit throughout the years I kept going there, I didn't give a fuck anymore, Why should I. vicious circle

In the summer of 2002 at age 14 I went on summercamp to Maloja Switzerland, this how ever was pretty good! I was put in a room with 5 other great dudes, one of them Jan-a dude with 'long' hair, quite the 'rebellious' type had leant me his discman, getting me immediatly into Rage Against The Machine. During lunchbreaks I sat with him at the table talking about all these new bands I got to know through him, picking up our food he said to the lunchlady, "I'm a vegetarian", and he got this rich filled plate of veggies and a great veggie burger. So I said "I'll take the same as him in my best French". This is pretty much how it started out, I never saw this dude again after that summer but the change he had brought I'll never forget. So I got home, saying I was veggie. Living in a small countryside town where agriculture is a big part of the daily life and your dad who's actually the son of a animalfarmer, it was pretty hard convincing my parents over and over again this was for real and not just some phase like they called it. So I kept it up, until this day over six years now, still a phase mom & dad, I don't think so.

So after that summer, back to school, shit got worse, even more due to the fact I was growing my hair and I didn't fit in into the image of the avarage scooterboy asshole my school was populated by. In that previous year, I always wanted to fit in, wanted to be a part of that gang, having no idea I was selling out on who I really was, RATM turned this all around. I realised I didn't have to fit in, in a matter of fact I didn't want to become an asshole like all of them, since then I was out of step with everyone and everything. Or at least at that time... I always knew things between me and my brother were watered down, since he was going to the same school as me and being 2 years older, instead of 'protecting' me or taking a stand for me he started out being the same dickhead like everyone else, even when I got into a fight and I saw him laughing at me, that did it, that was it, I knew then already we were through. About not fitting in, I'd hit me even harder when I was still in that phase of listing to the shit music my brother was into and for all I know the whole school, which was dance, techno and whatever, the rubbish kind and the music like RATM. I got into Deftones, one night I sent a text message to the radiostation to play Minerva by Deftones. They didn't have any albums by them they said. "You're listening to the wrong station dude" So I stopped listening to that crap.

So I thought I was out of step with everyone. I guess not. At school i began wandering around during lunch hours, just listening to music when I ran into some punk/hc kids, wearing Agnostic Front hoodies, having cazy hairstyles, running around with skateboards. I should smash my face into a wall for not getting together with these guys and getting into skateboarding as well. I guess I was afraid of getting my ass kicked again. I shouldn't of been afraid. One of those guys is now actually a pretty good friend of mine, maybe he is because I met him at a better time in my life. So I just held my distance getting into the music they were into.
And the next thing I know I failed my year and got to go look for another school.

So after looking for something the whole summer I eventually started out at VISO Mariakerke. This is where I went to school from 2004 upon graduation in 2007. This on the other hand was pretty much a great school. But that also caused me having troubles adjusting to everything and everyone. I met some really legit people, one of them was David. when I first saw him, I was like what the fuck, this kid's even worse then me, David switched schools the same year as me, coming out of pretty much the same situation as me, So he came into the classroom, late wearing this dready pants full of metal patches and wearing some Slipknot shirt. From that day we were hard to be spotted alone. we always hung out, pulling stupid jokes on each other, talking about music, new bands and whatever, I realized I finally found my place.

So after that first year of being together in school we decided to go to Pukkelpop in august of 2005. Over the months we got to know new bands and started checking them out, I saw an episode of Battle for Ozzfest where they were showing some live footage of an Unearth gig, and boy let me tell you I was hooked from the moment I heard them play! So at pukkelpop we got to check out 12 tribes, Everytime I die, A Life Once Lost and Chimaera. Especially those last dudes changed a lot, Me and David discovered the Pyrrhus Records Store in Ghent ran by Bruno who is now actually on of my closest friends. We bought the cd of Chimaera which was also released on Genet records where I spend my time now as well together with Bruno, and we started hanging out at the Pyrrhus more and more. That is where I found this:

This was my first HC show, november 12 2005, H8000 Fest.
We had no idea how this was gonna be but before we knew it we were on the train to Kortrijk, all we wanted was to see Chimaera, but after them Liar played, the almighty Liar. This night has changed my life forgood. that night I claimed Straight Edge as a part of me.
I had heard about it, but never seen or experienced 'it'. After pukkelpop I went to a metalfest in Eeklo where I met some great people and actually drunk my last bits of alcohol. After the fest me and my girl were going to a friend of hers her birthday party. This is where I met Duive. I'd seen him in Eeklo when I was still in school, I saw him on pukkelpop and also earlier that day in Eeklo at the fest roadying for Days Of Betrayal, of which he is now the singer. Since I knew almost no one at the party we started talking, he started talking about straight edge as well. David had claimed edge some months before pukkelpop, I was just getting to know it through him. So during september of that year I had quit everything, I stopped drinking, smoking and drugs. although I knew straight edge was the probable answer to all my questions, I needed someone to actually tell me. About a week later David showed up at school handing me over a cd that said it all: Minor Threat's Complete Discography:

This gave me the answer but still I needed convincing, something that Liar would quickly take care off on november 12 at H8000 fest. I never knew HC and SXE were and are something so big but at the same time so small. That night rocked my world, when I saw how intense this gig was, kids giving every single bit of energy they've got, singing every lyric along. This was what I've been looking for.

I do realize now, I might of turned edge out of fashion, or because some friends were doing it. I don't really care about it now, the edge has grown in me and nowadays I tend to keep it to myself in daily life, cause people only know the weird and shit things about SXE and HC. Throughout the years my concept and perception on straight edge changed, for the better, getting into bands like Champion, Betrayed and lots more. I started being straight edge as something for myself, the way it should actually be I guess.

So this is how it all started, me and David went more and more to shows, we were meeting new people, people like us, we made friends, in 2006 we got to know some of the Eeklo kids and we all went together to Ieperfest in august of that same year, we had the best of times and we still do.

Hardcore and Straight Edge have given me so much in this life that I'll never be able to repay if I had the chance to do so. It kept me from drinking myself into oblivion, it kept me from hanging out with the wrong people. It got me into being true to myself, it got me into great adventures, it made me get to know real, lasting friends.

I knew I could never pay back for what HC has given me.. how cheesy this may sound but after all I found a way to do my part. As we heard the Pyrrhus was closing down, we went to the shop for the gig that Bruno held in the empty store, No Recess and Shredder played, you could see it as an honor salute haha. after the show I said to Bruno, if you need anyone helping out with moving or whatever, I'm your guy, I guess he must've thought, 'another kid with lotsa talk and no action' so I heard nothing from him. In sept. of 2007 a bulletin was broadcasted through myspace genet was looking for volunteers so I applied, probably the best thing I did in 2007
From there on it went only upward, I got to know even more awesome music, awesome people got to see lots of bands and had the chance to work on Ieperfest in 2008 and currently working on the 2009 edition.

So this is my story, somewhere I should be thanking those fucking assholes from my old school. If they hadn't give me such a hard time, I wouldn't of been searching for something more, that something that led me to all of this, to all I have and am right now.
For those who know the story about Band of Brothers, you could see those guys as Capt. Sobel and me as Easy Company...

Thinking about the new year again made me go over some resolutions again...

1) I'd like to travel lots this year, not just Europe, cause when you've seen some Euro cities you've seen them all (that's not entirely true but you get the point) I could use a change of view. I do realise that this kind of travel needs quite some financial security, which I don't really have for now.
but none the less, I hope I get to see Australia within the coming years, the states(east and west coast) would be nice as well, but still, I think Australia is the best country to go to, trying to escape these cold winters. have christmas and new years eve on Bondy Beach-Sydney or where ever, I could get quite used to that

2) I'd like to have my part in touring this year, I know of some posibilities where I can tag along but I'll believe it when it's actually happening

3) I'd like to get more into photography, I'm getting a Lomo fisheye when my bankaccounts has some room to breath again and I'm currently expecting some boxes of Polaroid film that'll hopefully be compatible on my polaroid camera.

4) I'd like to get back to designing stuff on my computer like I used to do in highschool (I must say I was pretty good at it without showing off) but I left in on the side for too long and kinda lost touch with the programs. I did find an incredible (addictive) site which has give me some great inspirations on doing designs as well as streetart. Now I just have to put these ideas into reality

5) I'd like to have my love life less fucked up and screwed over every once in a while

No need for me to ask for amazing shows and festivals this year, I've been hearing that lots of great bands will be playing either here in Belgium or in Germany where I'll hopefully be again at Summerblast and Pressurefest. It also means seeing some mates again which makes me stoked

So it seems this summer will be off the hook, I only wonder how working might affects this. What I do have in mind for this summer is some crazy food parties in who ever's backyard, hot sunny days in Ghent, Ghent festivities, some swimming in the Blaarmeersen lake 10 min from the city, checking out the girls, freesbeeing the place up, having straight edge and vegitarianism (veganism?) rule my and my friends lives. growing a beard, hopefully getting tattooed if my money allows it

A new years eve full of suprises, but it was good none the less
although a friend of yours getting beat up by ten other dudes is not cool,
neither is seeing a girl getting either an epileptic shock or OD'ing on the dancefloor-take your pick. At least we helped out instead of laughing at her and trying to take a peek up her skirt, seriously what has this world come to.

New Years Eve started out for me in Ghent, which I visited in the afternoon, looking for a new needle for my turntable (which is now totally screwed because I had no idea how to dismantle the whole thing.) So I found Liar's Invictus LP on ltd. orange vinyl for just 15€

15€!! a few months ago I bidded over 60£ on ebay to get one of these so this one's a real bargain an obviously made my day and night.

Headed to Eeklo together with Ebert and Duive (Thanks for the ride) to hang out at their place, doing some food shopping and heading off to get cooking at Oliviers place. Good times, I really enjoyed it, spending some time with Olivier, Ebert, Debra and Inaki, we had some laughs, had great food, hung out watched the fireworks and moved out together with Kwinten to Waarschoot where the party was at.

Besides the few incidents I recalled earlier we had a blast. fuck
wrestling on the dancefloor, punkrock jumps, twosteps crazy dancemoves, doing some disco style whatever, the most bad ass moves, we went complete beserk.

As for Saturday 3rd of january Liar was playing in Bruges, the show organised by us at Genet Records. I wasn't really in the mood to go. I was doing the bar all night until Liar. They made it quite worth my while of coming out anyways.
One of the craziest and sickest shows I've seen them play. Everybody was cool and moving, no stupid attitudes just all hanging about and kicking out the jams.
Saw some friends again which I hadn't seen in while as well so it was a great night after all.

Hans was talking about the Gaza strip - Israël conflict nowadays in between songs. And I kinda noticed no one really seemed to care. I know I did/do

2009 hasn't really brought much of good and 'prosperity' to those regions, where they're still fighting a war which finds it's roots 60 years ago.
Israël has been accused of using fosfor grenades (2nd-3rd degree burnwounds as result) and Cluster ammunition which are both prohibited by the International Community. Israël has now been accused of firing mortar and tank shells and doing airraids on at least 2 UN schools which harboured a lot of innocent children and their families who thought they would find shelter and refuge in there. Numurous children lost their lives in these attacks.

If you ask me the Israël of nowadays isn't really far apart from Hitler's Germany in the 30-ties and 40-ties. A regime that caused the death of over 6 million jews - people related to those who now live in Israël and are in fact almost doing the same to the Palestinians. If you look at it, the Gaza Strip is much like the Warsaw Getto in WW2 only way bigger. Would you blame the Palestinians for taking a stand...

Israël says it'll continue until Hamas will be eliminated. If there's one thing I know is that is impossible, most of these people believe so strong in their cause, the fight for a free Palestine, that they aren't in fact afraid to die, The last thing the Israelies want is turn them into martyrs because that will one day become their own downfall.

Is this why they created the 'peacefull' state of Israël in 1948

Some friends of mine have been talking about Dawson's Creek lately, you know the American soap with some fucked up situation teenagers in it. I recently noticed they're playing reruns of the series on tv.
I never quite liked the first seasons, I've had enough complicated love issues on my own - thank you -, I do like the later seasons where Boston's the city where the story continues, probably because I quite like Boston (alot) and probably because for now I 'recognize' myself the most in this part of the twisted adventure Dawson and his posse are in, the characters grew and 'matured'.

I like to think I've grown alot this year and matured a lot in some way. Ebert told me about a week ago, that this change within some of us is very clearly and he enjoys to see each and every one of us grow, becoming more than just some kid.

So here's to Elke for bringing a topic like Dawson's Creek to my mind on her blog.

Last days of 2008, I don't consider it being a big deal but it's always cool to re-evaluate the past year.
2008 was a pretty good year I reckon, for me at least, it didn't start out that good but through the months things kept getting better.
I think I've learnt the most this year of all my years in my 20 year excistence.
Not only in school, which did taught me some interesting stuff, I got to learn a lot about people, by just meeting them, Genet and Ieperfest also played a huge role in my 'learningproces' this year. Through rough times and hardships I think I learned pretty much the most.

Through all ups and downs, 2008 is currently rated #1 I guess. A few reasons which made 2008 such a good year:
- meeting some incredible people from all over
- getting to work with bands and music in general
- getting the oppurtunity through Genet records to go to endless shows and gigs all year round and meet even more great people
- being able to participate and work with/for the Ieperfest festival, where I pretty much learned way more in 3 days than I'd learn in weeks/months
- working at the Polé Polé festival always makes me happy
- great new records from cool bands, great shows on festivals, great roadtrips to the festivals etc
- amazing times in Amsterdam, Germany, London
These are just a few examples and in some way a thank you to the people who were involved with any of the actions listed above.

Been a while since I wrote something here, I'm the worst when it comes to shortterm memory, what I do remember is this:

Recon, Liferuiner, To Kill tour passed through town.
it still amazes me how little people showed up for this show, like only 60?
it was a good show but short though. Hung out after the gig, Americans and Canadians trying to hit on Belgian women, awesomeness, pranks, fun, yes!!
To Kill and some of the guys in Recon slept over at Bruno's house, I had to stay as well in order to lock up the house in the morning when Bruno was already out to work. Everything went smooth, everyone back in the van until Ugo the guitarplayer forgot his pillow and got back to get it, closing the door behind him...
leaving me outside with no keys and no one inside to open the door, I kinda had an outburst there, got back my senses, phoned Bruno at work, no answer.
So I ran from Bruno's house to Jaspers appartment which I reached just in time, got on his pc started sending mails, looking up the address where Bruno works, walked all the way across town, got the keys from a cute secretary haha, had to run all the way to my bike who was still at the venue, went back to Bruno's place and arrived just in time at school, FUCK exhausted but happy everything went well

I did hear about a week ago that To Kill their van burned up, kinda hit me by shock, luckily no one got hurt and their gear is fine, they do need money for the van because they were still paying for the engine etc, so if you have any spare change and you'd like to help out check this out:

Jasper's benefitshow for the animal shelter, although I didn't care about the bands this was pretty much one of the coolest gigs in a while, just kids having fun, no bullshit, the show was for him and for lotsa kids a succes, after that we hung out at the overpoort, laughing and pranking, good talks great hangout, headed over to a 'studentsroom' (kot) - party where we didn't really know anyone together with Lucas, David, Renard and who ever else, we kinda instantly bonded with some of the people there having lotsa fun and pranks again

metalshows kinda bum me out, tottaly different atmosphere

autumn break, pretty busy for the whole week, holidays or no holidays.
there was the record release of Oathbreaker on Holy Shit! records together with Black haven and Shredder both on the same label
afterwards there was the Holy Shit! party at Sioux in Ghent to celebrate one year of HS, and celebrate we did, there was this HC vibe throughout the evening though, 'to cool to move' whatever, I'm not gonna bitch about it, I danced, I had fun, I went crazy. Saw lotsa friends again that night, great talks, lotsa laughter, way to many jokes, good times!

been sending out the Kingdom mcd promo out to various zines and other people who might review it, kinda siked about reading the reviews, I'm digging the record I hope others will enjoy it as well!

spended some time in Eeklo with partners in crime Olivier and Ebert, went to a show with some crappy bands haha but it was fun though, hung out afterwards at Oliviers place watching Tenacious D which was pretty awesome. Went to bed haha, we all slept in the same bed, while Ebert fell asleep, Olivier and I started asking him questions in his sleep with some hilarious answers in return, good times!

went back to Ghent around noon by train, shit weather, held an openday at the Genet HQ, which was shit, about 4 people came over
at night Horse the Band was playing, received word from the booking agency they might run late and later that was changed into "reasonable doubt whether they would make it to the show"
the venue was packed with kids, first bands had finished, then we started waiting and waiting, eventuelly they arrived and started playing at 1230h, the show was ment to end at 1130h or so, I was left in charge to finsih up and do the payments, had some talks together with Micha with the driver who turned out to be Cephalic Carnage's guitarplayer who we met at Ieperfest in august.
after all it was a good night, some stress, but good times, nice people and the best vegan food prepared by el picanto vegan bastardo Jean!

these are pretty much my highlights of the past few weeks

for now I'll continue reading stuff by E.E. Cummings, which I believe is a great writer, continue to work for school which is also starting to bum me out, work at Genet, see bands, go to parties
