"Is that a mirror in your pocket..."

"cos' I can sure see myself getting in your pants"

Graham Norton('s show) rules
and the line above -which I picked up during his show- is probably the best pick up line of 2008 let alone in the history of mankind.

I saw Liverpool winning from Newcastle with 5-1 in the Britisch Premier League yesterday, LVP is doing pretty good if you ask me

Some friends of mine have been talking about Dawson's Creek lately, you know the American soap with some fucked up situation teenagers in it. I recently noticed they're playing reruns of the series on tv.
I never quite liked the first seasons, I've had enough complicated love issues on my own - thank you -, I do like the later seasons where Boston's the city where the story continues, probably because I quite like Boston (alot) and probably because for now I 'recognize' myself the most in this part of the twisted adventure Dawson and his posse are in, the characters grew and 'matured'.

I like to think I've grown alot this year and matured a lot in some way. Ebert told me about a week ago, that this change within some of us is very clearly and he enjoys to see each and every one of us grow, becoming more than just some kid.

So here's to Elke for bringing a topic like Dawson's Creek to my mind on her blog.
Sadly enough Dawson's Creek is also known as the Sand Creek Massacre where in 186? Amercan Militia men under the command of Bill Dawson, killed about 150 old people, children and women of the native Cheyenne people.
that's FUBAR

Bought some English books few weeks ago, finished the first one - Saving Private Ryan - yesterday, loved it, just like the movie, kinda took my breath reading the final 2 chapters.
the book contains more shitlanguage than the movie so I'm down with it
-Band Of Brothers is up next, followed by The Sea poems. I love nautical inspired poetry

Rapping up 2008

Last days of 2008, I don't consider it being a big deal but it's always cool to re-evaluate the past year.
2008 was a pretty good year I reckon, for me at least, it didn't start out that good but through the months things kept getting better.
I think I've learnt the most this year of all my years in my 20 year excistence.
Not only in school, which did taught me some interesting stuff, I got to learn a lot about people, by just meeting them, Genet and Ieperfest also played a huge role in my 'learningproces' this year. Through rough times and hardships I think I learned pretty much the most.

Through all ups and downs, 2008 is currently rated #1 I guess. A few reasons which made 2008 such a good year:
- meeting some incredible people from all over
- getting to work with bands and music in general
- getting the oppurtunity through Genet records to go to endless shows and gigs all year round and meet even more great people
- being able to participate and work with/for the Ieperfest festival, where I pretty much learned way more in 3 days than I'd learn in weeks/months
- working at the Polé Polé festival always makes me happy
- great new records from cool bands, great shows on festivals, great roadtrips to the festivals etc
- amazing times in Amsterdam, Germany, London
These are just a few examples and in some way a thank you to the people who were involved with any of the actions listed above.

The end of the year does ask for a end of the year list, rapping up my musical favorites of 2008:

Top 10 records:
1. Have Heart - Songs To Scream At The Sun
2. Amenra - Mass IIII
3. Trash Talk - S/t
4. Killing The Dream - Fractures
5. Shipwreck AD - Abyss
6. The Black Heart Rebellion - Monologue
7. Embrace The End - Ley Lines
8. Reign Supreme - American Violence
9. Cold World - Dedicated To Babies Who Came With Feet First
10. Cruel Hand - Prying Eyes

The top five is pretty much the correct order the other ones I didn't really know where to put.
Records that where close to making it:
Kingdom - S/t
50 Lions - Down To Nothing - Split 7"
Days Of Betrayal - Decapitated For Research

Top 10(+3) live performances:
1. Betrayed - Ieperfest
2. Have Heart - Ieperfest, MOD Hasselt
3. 50 Lions - Frontline Ghent, Pressurefest
4. Amenra - Recordrelease Ghent, Ieperfest
5. The Black Heart Rebellion - Graphic Art School Ghent
6. Trash Talk - Ill Blood Fest Izegem, Pressurefest
7. Comeback Kid - Summerblast Trier
8. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Hof Ter Loo Antwerp

11.Baroness - Summerblast Trier, Melkweg Amsterdam
12.War From A Harlots Mouth - Maldegem
13.Negative Approach - Summerblast Trier, Hof Ter Loo Antwerp

The shows listed above were my favorites of 2008, not only because of the music, mostly the people involved, people I met, people I was with at the show, the drive to and from the show.. it all played a role

Best parties of this year were:
1. Student Kickoff Ghent - shitfaced Lucas (fuck yeah)
2. Jaspers fundraiser and Josefiens houseparty afterwards
3. Ghent festival (Genste Fieste) - Polé Polé festival
4. Ieperfest Afterparty
5. Holy Shit Party at Sioux

Best Tv-shows of 2008
1. Californication

As for 2009 I have no clue so far what's going to happen, I can make a guess though.
Get a job asap, move out hopefully around March in the best appartment I've seen to this date. Get over stuff. Taking pictures. Cooking. Add people to the 2009 shitlist. Mad parties. Crazy gigs. Awesome records. Off the hook hangouts. Being badass 24/7

" It's time to make your life worthwhile "

I tend to do weird impulsive things when I fuck up in school
I went to London this weekend.

after dropping out of college,
a new and interesting change of events I must say

I'm not getting into it for what and what not
don't come and whine I should continue, there are enough people doing that already, don't bother. what's done is done and I'm not taking it back.

London. yes London
Vegan food, common availability, awesomeness!
Kate Nash's Made of Bricks on pink vinyl, sweet!
Mouthpiece, some 7" I didn't know it excisted for 50p, even sweeter
Northern England accents, best ever
hanging out like a bunch of tourists, which we actually were so yes

I wanted to get some christmas presents but I ended up spending most of my money on records and vegan food. again

A big thank you and shout out to Alan and Kim who took us in for three nights and giving me the care I needed since I was ill. Thanks to them and Rat as well for showing us around, showing us the sights, good places to eat, we wouldn't have found some of them without you.
Thanks to Alan for showing me the Britisch Museum which kinda blew me away, a must see
An even bigger thank you to Bruno for taking me to London and putting up with me and my cranky-sickness behaviour for 3 days.

I've spent the night at Bruno's together with Your Fall from Brazil
check these guys out if you're into raw voiced good old hardcore, they're currently on tour with Locked In from Italy, last week of the tour so catch them if you have the chance

So I'm back home now,
some kid's dad I kno(e)w died this week of cancer, he was a good man he really was.
It's hard to comprehend people die and yet it's all too real
- right now I'm waiting for a ten-beaufort lecture made up by my parents to enlighten me of my own stupitity.

I hate everything all over again

my girl, my girl...

I saw Have Heart yesterday
it's been a while since a band's music made me feel the way I felt yesterday

"But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams,
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream,
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied,
so he opens his throat
to sing"

"Find me a reason to not sink in these waves

Don't tell me the horizon harbors better days."

You know, it's all well and good to talk about happy endings
but if a person can't deliver, if that person keeps screwing up.
Well eventually I guess you kinda just have to say 'fuck you'

Not even insomnia makes these nights any shorter,
winter's here and I'm not excited.

I hate snow

Resolution.

current playlist:
a lot of Killing The Dream lately, More Than Life
great tunes, lyrics that make to much sense

Trash Talk makes ma wanna punch a hole in my wall and trash all the furniture I get my hands on. fuck

For those reading and interested, I'm thinking of putting up a new blog, I'm not quitting on this one, I want to start a music blog about some of my favorite records, maybe some reviews, stuff like that, more on that lateron.

Besides this no real highlights, been working hard for school, trying to combine this with other work at Genet and at home. Been hanging out, but not as much I wish I could've. Tomorrow there's this poppunk thing on a big square in Ghent, will be a good hangout I reckon.

Everything kinda sucks right now, school's shit, weather's shit - I hate snow, and let's not even start about love.

luckily I have Trash Talk and Killing The Dream taking care of all that shit.

"I'll find it again, in a different place. in a different time,
with a different face. I'll keep moving, because I've got to keep moving.
just take whatever's left. my heart is dry. this is my last breath.
this used to be everything. I gave everything."

La mort du soldat est près des choses naturelles

"Life contracts and death is expected,
as in a season of autumn.
the soldier falls

When the wind stops and, over the heavens,
the clouds go, nevertheless,
in their direction."

a sight so fleetingly free of how october left me

fuck. get into have heart, get into sinking ships, get into champion, get into mouthpiece, get into miles away, get into amen ra get into guns up!, get into go it alone, get into embrace the end, get into hella too much bands!

the bands listed above are those I practically listened to for the past few days/weeks and which make me siked about hardcore over and over again

Been a while since I wrote something here, I'm the worst when it comes to shortterm memory, what I do remember is this:

Recon, Liferuiner, To Kill tour passed through town.
it still amazes me how little people showed up for this show, like only 60?
it was a good show but short though. Hung out after the gig, Americans and Canadians trying to hit on Belgian women, awesomeness, pranks, fun, yes!!
To Kill and some of the guys in Recon slept over at Bruno's house, I had to stay as well in order to lock up the house in the morning when Bruno was already out to work. Everything went smooth, everyone back in the van until Ugo the guitarplayer forgot his pillow and got back to get it, closing the door behind him...
leaving me outside with no keys and no one inside to open the door, I kinda had an outburst there, got back my senses, phoned Bruno at work, no answer.
So I ran from Bruno's house to Jaspers appartment which I reached just in time, got on his pc started sending mails, looking up the address where Bruno works, walked all the way across town, got the keys from a cute secretary haha, had to run all the way to my bike who was still at the venue, went back to Bruno's place and arrived just in time at school, FUCK exhausted but happy everything went well

I did hear about a week ago that To Kill their van burned up, kinda hit me by shock, luckily no one got hurt and their gear is fine, they do need money for the van because they were still paying for the engine etc, so if you have any spare change and you'd like to help out check this out:

"paypal account to help to kill

so after a fast check we are pretty much in the shit. we still have to pay some of our debts to buy the engine of the dead van plus insurance for 6 more months and so on... basically situation sucks. we did a paypal account. if you would like to donate whatever even few euroes can makes a big difference for us.
the email is helptokill@gmail.com
thanx so much and thanx a lot also for the tons of messages and mail you are writing us for support it really means the world to us.
spread the word as much as you can.
all the best
the show must go on
TK"

Jasper's benefitshow for the animal shelter, although I didn't care about the bands this was pretty much one of the coolest gigs in a while, just kids having fun, no bullshit, the show was for him and for lotsa kids a succes, after that we hung out at the overpoort, laughing and pranking, good talks great hangout, headed over to a 'studentsroom' (kot) - party where we didn't really know anyone together with Lucas, David, Renard and who ever else, we kinda instantly bonded with some of the people there having lotsa fun and pranks again

thanks to Josephine, lady of the house for the good times!

metalshows kinda bum me out, tottaly different atmosphere

autumn break, pretty busy for the whole week, holidays or no holidays.
there was the record release of Oathbreaker on Holy Shit! records together with Black haven and Shredder both on the same label
afterwards there was the Holy Shit! party at Sioux in Ghent to celebrate one year of HS, and celebrate we did, there was this HC vibe throughout the evening though, 'to cool to move' whatever, I'm not gonna bitch about it, I danced, I had fun, I went crazy. Saw lotsa friends again that night, great talks, lotsa laughter, way to many jokes, good times!

been sending out the Kingdom mcd promo out to various zines and other people who might review it, kinda siked about reading the reviews, I'm digging the record I hope others will enjoy it as well!

spended some time in Eeklo with partners in crime Olivier and Ebert, went to a show with some crappy bands haha but it was fun though, hung out afterwards at Oliviers place watching Tenacious D which was pretty awesome. Went to bed haha, we all slept in the same bed, while Ebert fell asleep, Olivier and I started asking him questions in his sleep with some hilarious answers in return, good times!

went back to Ghent around noon by train, shit weather, held an openday at the Genet HQ, which was shit, about 4 people came over
at night Horse the Band was playing, received word from the booking agency they might run late and later that was changed into "reasonable doubt whether they would make it to the show"
the venue was packed with kids, first bands had finished, then we started waiting and waiting, eventuelly they arrived and started playing at 1230h, the show was ment to end at 1130h or so, I was left in charge to finsih up and do the payments, had some talks together with Micha with the driver who turned out to be Cephalic Carnage's guitarplayer who we met at Ieperfest in august.
after all it was a good night, some stress, but good times, nice people and the best vegan food prepared by el picanto vegan bastardo Jean!

these are pretty much my highlights of the past few weeks

for now I'll continue reading stuff by E.E. Cummings, which I believe is a great writer, continue to work for school which is also starting to bum me out, work at Genet, see bands, go to parties
next up is this thursday:

for whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

.will we ever learn

evil was planted deep into the earth. locked in the cage of python. exiled in the reptile land. empty looks, faces without expression. rejected monsters are puking. death gifted with the gift of life. entertainments inside cells. how are you gonna fly with your wings cut. consciences build from the cages of brain demolition. vacant people in the reptile land. sceletal people into the dead cities. people closed inside institutions set in line one behind another, with blinded eyes and mouths shut. our weak whispers and colourless voices fade away meaningless like the wind in the desert. rapped in darkness when the sun is still reigning outside.

when are knowledge and love going to enter in our brains.

Black Hawk Down

.heartbroken
yet again...

"When I go home people'll ask me, "Hey Hoot, why do you do it man? What, you some kinda war junkie?" You know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is."

Ma-alinti Rangers

This quote stands for the tragic series of events that happened on the 3rd and 4th of october 1993 - 15 years ago on this day in Mogadishu Somalia

I've come to realize that most people do not give a fuck at all anymore about wars, death, poverty, and so on, we've become used to it, the media, gaming industry bring us from time to time a 'realistic' view on war that we think it's a walk in the park
I can't disagree with people saying "what's in the past is in the past, we have to look forward instead of backwards" yes indeed, we should but this doens't mean we should forget about for instance what happened 15 years ago

I'm not here to defend the American overseas policy, I'm not, I'm here for the simple man doing his job, putting bread on the table for his family by simply following orders. Men and women who refuse to die for 'king and country' but who would die and died in service to protect their fellow soldiers, the people who payed the ultimate price so that others would make it home. If only more people would look at it this way, things might be different in the future

I'd like to tell the story of 'The day of the Rangers', a story that has been told before by Mark Bowden in his book called 'Black Hawk Down' which was made into a film, if this doesn't ring a bell, please read on.

In the late eighties, start of the nineties, Africa had grown -pardon my language- to shit. Civil war and chaos reigned through different countries of the black continent, one of them was Somalia, after a coup d'etat, a man called Mohammed Farrah Aidid, became the most important figures of Somalia being one of the biggest warlords. Somalia was divided and enraged due to tribal wars, Aidid's tribe, the Habar Gidr, being one of the biggest. You can compare this tribal war with the tribal war of Rwanda which meant the death of over 1 million people in 1994 ...
If it wasn't for the UN Somalia might of been the Rwanda of 1992, The UN with the US as one of the most important countries instated peace coalition forces in the coutry, the US leading the forces with 20,000 marines deployed. This series of events had put an end to fightings for some time, and food supplies began to enter Somalia to prevent a nationwide tragedy of starvation and stop the warlords of using hunger as a weapon.

By the end of '92 and start of '93 the US started the withdrawel of it's marines, leaving the remaining UN forces low in numbers, Mohammed Farrah Aidid, started attacking and killing the remaining UN forces who were still in the country, the biggest strike was the brutal assault and death of 24 Pakistani soldiers, which were slaughtered by a angry mob who was know as Aidid's militia. This was the signal for the US to send in troops again, former president Clinton decided not to deploy a massive amount of troops but send in small units of elite forces being: Army Delta Force, Navy Seals, and the Army Rangers. Their mission was to seize Aidid and bring him to justice, the mission was estimated to take up to one month. It lasted for 3 months until October.

I won't be getting into the whole story so I'll just start out with october 3rd.
The mission objective on october 3rd was to capture 2 of Aidid's ministers, the mission was scheduled at noon, being a first time because previous mission-who went smoothly- were performed at night due to the technical advantages US forces had (Night vision). Noon was also a bad timing, Somalies were hooked on a drug named Khat, bringing them in extase, making them feel 'supernatural', invincible, you know the works. The building where the 2 ministers were was located in one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods of the city being Bakara market, where guns, RPG's and so on were sold like we would buy vegetables and fruit on a market.
So taking all this together, attack during daylight, when they're all fucked up on Khat, the most dangerous part of town where the militia can mount a counterattack in few minutes. Sounds like a recipe to disaster to me, I'm not alone, 15 years ago, many of those men had the same thoughts about it.

The mission was planned to go like this: Delta force would fly in with 4 AH 6 Little Bird choppers, each one carrying 4 Deltas, they would storm the objective and seize the targets. One minute later 4 MH-60 Black Hawks would hover above the four corners of the target building, each one carrying 6-8 men fast-roping down from the choppers and secure a perimeter around the building. These 4 'chalks' would hold the perimeter until 5 minutes later a ground convoy of Humvees and 3,5 ton trucks would arrive to load up the prisoners and the landed Deltas and Rangers, bringing them all back home.

The mission planned started to crumble apart during the fast roping of the Rangers, Pvt. Todd Blackburn, age 18, missed the rope and fell down from the chopper on the street, breaking his spine, leaving him half dead. Blackburn received first aid and was loaded up into a Humvee and was evactuated, during his evac, the Humvee gunner, sgt. Dom Pilla was shot in the head, making him the first KIA.
As soon as the second part of the convoy was about to leave, the one thing nobody would hold true happened, the report through the radio/intercom/walkie talkie "Black Hawk down, we've got a Black Hawk down" gave everyone a shock. The chopper was hit by an RPG which killed the tail rotor and made the chopper go down. The CSAR chopper (Combat Search And Rescue) was sent to the crashsite to give first aid and defend the wounded until relieved. Delta and Ranger forces who were at the target building were sent out to secure the crashsite. Ground forces struggled to reach the site because of the growing number of hostile forces converging on their positions, the whole city was mobilized by the militia, women and children were used as human shields, making this a very delicate situation.

The US forces at that time in Somalia had a code of honor which still lasts until this day, 'Leave no man behind, dead or alive, we all come home together' this being said, pilot Cliff Wolcott and his co-pilot were killed upon impact and due to the heavy crash the chopper 'dug' itself in and the 2 pilots were unable to be retrieved by hand, to get them out they would need heavy tools to cut open the cockpit and get them out. by this time the wounded crew chiefs were evacuated and the approaching ground forces arrived at the scene.

At that time Super-64 flown by Michael Durant replaced Super-61, flown by Wolcott who just crashed. Seems like Super-61 had left a curse upon it's position in the formation, few minutes later, Super-64 took an RPG hit and went down seconds later in a different part of town.

The situation began to look hopeless, up to now, the US forces had suffered more casulties in one hour than they had in the past 3 months.
No CSAR chopper was available this time to fly in and secure the second crashsite, remaining ground forces were directed to the site but were slowed down in such a way by the militia, they would never reach the site in time, the ground convoy who returned to base, dropping off wounded and killed men, returned to the city to the site, they were also unable to reach because of the roadblocks the militia had set up. No one could reach the site in time to hold off the angry mob who was approaching to kill everybody left alive in that helicopter. Nobody except for 2 Delta snipers, circeling around the city, msgt. Randy Shughart and msgt. Gary Gordon offered themselves to be dropped off and hold the site until relieved. To keep it short: these 2 men died in their attempt to protect the shot-down crew. Of the second crashsite including the 2 delta snipers, the pilot - Mike Durant is the only one who survived, he was beaten half dead and then captured and held for 11 days. As for Shughart and Gordon, if you'd wanna use the term 'hero', hold these 2 in mind...
I think they somewhere knew they wouldn't come home from this mission, knowing of their experience, they would've stand an excelent chance but being overwhelmed by hundreds of militia against 2 lonesome snipers, the odds turned against them, knowing what to expect, knowing they ran a big risk of dying in some shithole country didn't held them back of going in to protect those men.

In some way I respect the Somali point of view, they would protect their houses etc whatever the cost, a war is still a war, kill or be killed, but butchering, cutting of limbs and carry them around as trophies aren't exactly my thoughts of fighting a war. The remains of Shughart and Gordon and the killed crewmembers were returned a few days later.

But this wasn't the end of the tragedy. They still needed to protect and evcuate the first crashsite, which was constantly under fire, during the night of the 3rd and 4th of october, the 2 pilots were finally cut out of the wreck and Pakistani and Malasian armored vehicles were send out to the site to evacuate all remaining personel. They probably forgot how many troops were still in the city because the capacity of the armored vehicles was too small to carry everyone back home, many troops had to , yes run all the way back, knowing that they were constantly under fire, 360°around, I would run my ass off...

This is a short version of telling the story, in a short version there isn't always room for giving names, giving details, so this might be not touching to you or who ever that is reading this at all, not knowing who this is about makes it easier to deal with...

Prices were payed for this battle of Mogadishu..
500 and more are estimated to be killed on Somali side, leaving over a 1000 wounded
The US suffered 18 KIA's and around 80 injured men.
The overall death rate on Somalian side continues to add up, in 1993, the people who died of starvation and the conflicts it bring with it was 300.000

threehundred thousand and still counting

In some way this event led to the genocide of 1 million people in Rwanda in april of 1994, hadn't the US and UN hadn't had this bad experiences in Somalia, bad experiences being, wanting to help out and getting shot for it... Maybe they would have interveaned in the conflict that killed one fifth of the Rwanda population at that time...

Me, being a 20 year old guy, it's kinda hard to comprehend what thrives men to do vicious things like cutting up dead bodies, or just killing in general, I won't be judging anyone here because who am I to judge if I wasn't there to experience what they experienced

this story isn't meant to tell you that the US ain't that bad at all, and that all others are the real bad guys...

this story is for Jamie Smith, who was shot in his tigh while saving one of his men he served with, Smith caught a bullet he wasn't supposed to catch, the bullet hit his artery in his tigh, his comrades give him the best of care they could give, they even tried to clamb off the artery to stop the bleeding, which meant ripping open the wound in order to find the artery, they did everything they were capable of doing in that particular situation.
Jamie Smith died that night at the age of 21.

this story is for Richard Kowalewski, who drove a truck in the lost convoy, trying to evacuate the wounded who were loaded up his truck. The truck cabine was shot by an RPG (rocket propelled grenade/bazooka) which went through the door to end up stuck into Kowalewski torso and not exploding. Kowalewski survived the hit, was evacuated to the base.
Richard Kowalewski died at the age of 20.

this story is for Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon, for using the worst of mankind to help protect the best of mankind. They both received the Medal Of Honor posthumously after being cut to pieces and driven around the city tied to a rope behind a car...
they didn't ask to be heroes, sometimes it just turns out that way
Randy and Gordon both left a wife and kids

this story is for the daughter of Maria Osman, who was killed due to the crash of the second chopper on her house, while taking a nap
She died at the age of 3...

this story is for You, so You would realize, war isn't how we see it on tv, movies and games. war isn't a game, it's life or death, kill or be killed

"Dulce et decorem est pro patria mori", the old lie
these have become empty words for the veterans of the battle for Mogadishu, I bet to say, these words have become empty words to every man or woman who has seen war with his/her own eyes...

I wrote the story on the things I can still remember from reading the book, watching the movie and doing some research on the internet about it, I might be wrong about some things but this is the story in main lines, if you wanna know more about it just look it up in wikipedia or whatever...

Black Hawk Down, the movie starts out with a quote by Plato, i'd like to use it as an endnote

"Only the dead have seen the end of war"

to end this entire story, these words are written by Randy Shughart in his last letter to his wife and kids.

"My Love, you are strong and you will do well in life. I love you and my children deeply. Today and tomorrow, let each day grow and grow. Keep smiling and never give up, even when things get you down. So, in closing, my love... Tonight, tuck my children in bed warmly. Tell them I love them. Then hug them for me and give them both a kiss good night for daddy."

Decapitated For Research

Days Of Betrayal's first full lenght album is out
Sunday oct 5th they'll be playing at their release show in Maldegem's jh Redekiel, along with Sylosis (UK), War From A Harlots Mouth (GER) and A Life Once Lost (US)
come down and support

I've seen DOB play for way to many times and they are a metalband I don't really get sick of, why? because they continue to grow in their musical proficiancy. Every release is totally different from previous releases as it should be but still staying DOB, sticking to their roots. DOB delivers a blend of death metal, metalcore amongst others. Another upside to this band and defenetly the last release is that you can't compare them to any other band, the influences of other bands are so little that they have-for me personally-created an own category.
I saw them play some weeks ago, presenting their new cd, playing all new songs, sound was kinda poor, due to the venue, I'm hoping for a better pa-sound tomorrow, so we'll be able to discover all elements they are ready to unleash upon us
looking forward to buy their album and give it some spins!

.on that bird in the cage

this may sound familiar, if you talked to me in the last few weeks I probably mentioned already how good 'Songs To Scream At The Sun' by Have Heart is.

this album... I don't see any downsides, I've been listening to this album a lot in the past few weeks, maybe too much, and it doesn't fail me in any matter

I love everything about it from the actual musical part to the artwork, looking at the cover photo, which I consider one of the best I've ever seen, just the simplicity of it all
I'm not really the guy that is able to review an album musicwise because I know shit about mixing mastering or whatever else reviewers look/listen at while giving it a spin. In my modest opinion, Songs To Scream At The Sun is in a way better than The Things We Carry, musically they are different but it's still Have Heart, lyricwise, it's defenetly better, not that I think TTWC's lyrics were bad, not at all, but the band grew, and writing songs like this about things that are so personal and so narrow to ones heart, I can only have the deepest respect.

This album has been functioning as my spine for the past few weeks, I've learned a lot about life and myself lately and these songs only back it up. Riding my bike from home to Ghent and vice versa, gives you some time to listen, and I listened a lot in the first few days, afterwards I was riding my bike singing, hearing the lyrics over and over, thinking about how close some of them are related to my own life... Flynn got me even writing for myself, not that it won't get even close to what he has achieved in writing his songs, but writing stuff down kinda helped me letting it all out in a different way, a way I hadn't tried before.

"I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing
than teach ten thousands stars how to dance..."

Pat Flynn, don't ever stop writing

.no arms can hold, no home can warm

.no compass can guide me home
for i'm the magnetical declination that disrupts the needle of pointing homeward
for i'm the sailor who shipwrecked in an endless storm of emotions, home becomes an empty word
for i can grow hopeless, or rebuild my future
for the future i can call home

deep down I wished I didn't need to write things like this...

.le fils des faux

life has a way of screwing us all over, yet another lesson learned

People died in the past few weeks, and some got seriously injured...
most of them I didn't knew in person or not quite so good, others were and are more familiar, life screws us over, all of us, you know those 'wrong place wrong time' situations.
Then again, thousands of people die everyday, and no one seems to care because we don't know about it, out of sight, out of mind. I can't blame anyone, everybody including me has this, it would be rather sad if we would all live in grief for the thousands of deaths of everyday.

Cherish these days of your youth and the rest of your life, dont be spending to much time doing the complete opposite or just wasting some of your most valueble days.

In other events,
I quite stink at remembering things which happend shortby, by now I do remember that I planned on going to the Blacklisted and RTTM gig in Antwerp 2 weeks ago... I was supposed to meet a good friend there but she didn't show up so that actually bummed my whole day, the gig was cool nonetheless, but expected some more of the gig overall.

As far as I remember I have no fucking clue what I did during that week, I guess finishing up my room, which is finished, of which I have no photos yet because I'm too lazy to take them and put them on..

Last weekend, there was Kozzmosh, a pretty cool fest in Kortemark - shithole - Belgium, bands were pretty cool, people were low in numbers which suprised me, because, Lenght Of Time and No Turning Back were headlining, I don't think the organizers were able to cover their expenses so that kinda sucked.
Afterwards on the way home we arranged to get a free entrance at Bruges Thoprock, the bandplaying part was already over, so we crashed in during the afterparty, which was off the freaking hook!, too bad it didn't last that long, saw friends, met new people, went crazy on some crunk tunes, shit was tight.

Monday, there was the Summer Slaughter tour hitting Belgium, Aarschot.
Worked the bar for the entire night, saw all bands play, Abigail Williams defenetly drew my attention, not only due to the girl who was playing the keys, this band delivered a really tight set which suprised me, because on cd I'm not really their biggest fan, but live they really bring it. Suicide Silence was quite sick as well but short though, As Blood Runs Black, played kind off sloppy if you ask me, but awesome show nonetheless. Hung out before-during-after the gig, ate auntie Ritas vegan food, which was awesome²²²², heard crazy tourstories of AW, none will be released here, what happens on tour stays on tour..

From the past weeks I do remember some more, got myself registered into college again, communicationsmanagement it is for this year, I hope it works out better than last year, sure enough payed enough for it to make it work.. hopefully
have the worst ID picture ever for my students card, not even the biggest potsmoker could compete with it, mark my words.

Wednesday, yes! wednesday, Genet bbq/hangout/party
good times, vegan bbq party at my house, laughter, jokes, stories, fun indeed.

Thursday, I was about to write I totally forgot what I did, just came up to me; Introduction day at college, you know, first day, kinda awkward, met a girl I knew since kindergarden or so, pretty cool, met some people together, skipped some introduction sessions because I know what their about from last year, hung out in Ghent with Micha, sitting in the tribunes for the flower parade that was today haha
Saw Yoni passing by, texting him what he was doing, turns out he's doing the same like me, only he is in a different group, but never the less, looks like this will be pretty cool, got my books, which turned out cheaper than I thought.

Friday, Micha's gig, arriving early to help out, the street is packed with (drunk) high school-college kids, I can handle drunk people, but this was just plain stupid.
the show was pretty cool, he was able to cover all expenses so thats cool as well.
Days Of Betrayal played, last time I saw them was... a gazillion years ago, meanwhile they recorded a full cd, got signed to Shiver records and are releasing their debut in october, they played all new songs, which were pretty wild, they're isn't really a band I can compare this band with, which is a good thing, more about DOB and their release in a future post.
hung out afterwards with friends, haha there was a drunk coke dealer hanging around as well who stole a girls wallet, cops showed up, the dude was gone, had a laugh, got back inside bla bla
we ended up hitting up one of the 43569 pita joints there are in Ghent, eating some falafal, heading over to Micha's place together with Eddy!, we were racing downhill on the empty streets on a rolling chair we found next to the street, it was a blast(EDDY RULES)
slept together with Eddy on an unfolded couch bed thing, with I think a curtain as bedsheet, cold as hell, we took some kinky picturs which should be censored haha

Saturday, woke up, breakfast in ghent, hanging out, heading home, hating the fact of being at home while my home should be somewhere else if you ask me...
Got a call late that night, parents are in Turkey, Dad's in the hospital, great

Today, parents got home, dad might need an operation, great²
life...
screwing us over...
anytime..
anywhere...
kinda figured it out by now

Tomorrow, first day of school, back in Ghent, wednesday, Student kick off party
friday, the LIAR revival, Saturday, seeing the girl I was supposed to meet at Blacklisted again, hoping that nothing else comes up that might screw up the whole deal, Trash Talk's playing + Liar, should be a hell of weekend again

This is my kingdom... it means everything to me...

Wow, the past week has passed like nothing!
Last week the Revelation shipment arrived containing over 1300 items (FUCK YEAH)
Opening the boxes was feeling like a little kid on christmas morning, here are some pics

'Songs to scream at the sun'..
holy shit what a record, I'm probably the only one as far as I know who like this album better than 'The things we carry'.
Flynn has a way of writing songs that seem to match with my life in some cases, maybe that's why I love the record so much, It almost gives me the feeling some songs were written about stuff in my life, and through this, it makes it easier for me to handle with it, so get into the new Have Heart, it rocks

Last week was also pretty fucking hectic if you ask me, 2 last minute cancels for Ieperfest just a few days before the actual fest... Ringworm and Outbreak were forced to cancel their tour so we had to fix this, these bands aren't really bands you can replace by who ever you want so our search led us to, Rise and Fall who replaced Outbreak, a pretty cool replacement if you ask me, they killed it!

Replacing Ringworm we were asking for The First Step, how massive cool that would've been, TFS wasn't an option, me being a big BETRAYED fan proposed to let Betrayed play so we got back in touch with Aram, who said this would work out!

Betrayed was booked, only thing we had to do was book the plane tickets and this is were the shit hit the fan, wrong flight bookings due to siteproblems and being mislead, flight cancellation because they were fully booked, thursday night wasn't looking so good because only Greg's flight was going as planned. I kinda died that night due to stress and lack of sleep...
But for every problem there is a solution, we got the tickets after all through Ivonno Avocado's husband who fixed it all, for which i'm utter gratefull.

Having this solved didn't mean we had time to lay back, Betrayed features 4 members who were coming in on 3 different flight... so we had to arrange a pickup for all 4.
I had no idea who to call, until I looked in my phonebook and called Duive aka Pidgeon, who just said, "why the fuck not, I'll do it". I owe this guy my life, over the weekend he drove 3 times to the airport which is pretty distant from the fest, missing some of the bands he really wanted to see.
He had a big part in making it all happen so a big shout out to him!

Time now to rap up the fest itself, we arrived with the Genet distro at about 1am on fridaymorning, the prefest had ended but there were still some people running around. Started the loadout of the van, storing it all in containers. Around that time the mainstage arrived so we helped out setting it up, no sleep after this as well because the merch tent had to be cleaned up and set up for the next day, when allthis was over it was about 5 am and we were looking at a short night of sleep.

Friday during the day was hell. This year we were forced to move locations, it has been on paved floors for years until this year, the fest took place on a piece of grassland... grassland, rain and thousands of people running around don't match one bit
The fest became one pool of mud which sucked endlessly, next to that friday was the worst day considering bands cancelling or wanting to be switched because they had to catch an early ferry or whatever. Also some tourmanagers are dickheads, I'm not calling any names but fucking hell some people have a serious lack of respect towards other people.

Although friday was quite a disaster there were some good times as well, saw Kingdom play again (check out there release on Genet Records) meeting new people, fun at the afterparty, some dude going completely nekkid on the afterparty, shit was tight!

Saturday: JOY!
pretty good weather, cold wind though but almost no clouds
It became clear saturday was going to be a pretty good day in comparisson to friday, and it was
almost no bands coming late or cancelling except for the John Joseph Spoken word we had to cancel due to trafficproblems which was a personal bummer for me.
Saw Trigger the bloodshed play, and what the hell, I wonder how old their drummer is, he seems awfully young and he rages! See you next tuesday, awesome live band if you ask me, Jerusalem the black who played an awesome set (check their 7" and mcd, it rocks!) Nothing gold can stay who played some of their news songs that will be released on their new cd by Genet records, met up with Danny NGCS, great guy to hang out with, representin Vienna HC

Missed out on Dicarga because I was getting siked for Betrayed who played afterwards
The Betrayed gig was without doubt the best show of my entire life, from the first till the last note, high fives and stage dives, pile ons and sing a longs, an intense crowd for an intense band. Speeches by Aram which should've been recorded because they made so much sense hearing them. Before we knew it, it was time for the last song, being UNDERSTAND, talking about a singalong, in the last part of the song it goes like "still lost still hurting still searching so desperate for anwsers..." there was this maaaaaaaaaaaaassive pile on on stage, I joined in but due to the weight of more and more people we all suddenly fell off the stage which hurted like hell, me being at the bottom together with Aram and some other guys, Aram lost his mic, looking me in the eyes grabbing my head whilst I grabbed his and yelling in each others faces "STILL LOST STILL HURTING STILL SEARCHING SO DESPERATE FOR ANSWERS" ...
I could've died happy there, the show hurted like hell, I got kicked in the jaw fell on my head got punched in the face and ribs but it all came down to that moment right there in front of the stage on the ground.

Amenra was headlining the marquee stage, intense and breathtaking as always not much more to say, sucked ass that parkway drive started playing during RA's set

Saturday night hangout was crazy allthough i called it an early night, I wish I didn't cause I heard the afterparty was off the hook!
Said our goodbye to Betrayed who were leaving in the morning, took some pictures:

Sunday was kinda so so
changing weather, some problems needed to be fixed,
Rise and Fall played, they killed it, like they always do, looking forward to their upcoming release
It rained old ladies during Verse, expected more of this band but it was cool anyways.
Have Heart, still kicks ass, their new songs are like a choking hand around my throat, something that gives you the shivers, pretty bummed about the power failure during their set

took some pictures of H2O which turned out not as good as I hoped. Catched some glimps of The Locust playing as last band for the fest

Rapping up the fest, it was a personal succes, my first time helping out, and I really had the feeling I did some good by helping out, doing my little part

My goal was to meet more people from all over and get to see some bands I wanted to see, and both goals are achieved.
met people from the UK, Russia, Germany, Brazil, Australia, the US, Holland, Spain, Austria...
shit thing about it, I'll be seeing these people only again with the next edition or even later

downsides of the fest:
the new location which gave us a lot of trouble

People trashing the Ieperfest cups

Seeing people wearing an 'armed with a mind' shirt trashing their tent and burning whatever stuff they were too lazy to carry home again, makes you re evaluate the whole deal

too everyone who made the camping to a dump, FUCK YOU, I've spent 2 days helping cleaning up your shit, and the cleanup hasn't ended yet. While i'm writing this there are still people cleaning up the shit in Ieper you left behind, Not only the camping and the festivalground needs some cleaning, the scene could use a big cleansing as well..

We try to to our best to make a difference with the fest with a garbage system we have sorting all the garbage to make a difference and you guys let it all go to waste, thanks a lot for it

And what is up with the tuffguy attitude and fights, I think this year was pretty much the worst, Too much testosteron or what? fighting over silly little things, what is this, kindergarden?

another upside to the fest! Vegan Tash and her kitchencrew perform miracles, such good vegan food, it was the best! thank you for that

Thanks to my friends for helping out at the distrotable or where ever they could
thanks also to them for cleaning up their part of the camping, shit thing is that some people ripped open all of the garbage bags and your efforts are to waste

The beauty of a shitty week

Rapping up this week, I've noticed I had some shitty days, apart from a few things nothing serious, just shitty.
Living outside of the city (Ghent) is a pain in the ass, defenetly when you have to ride 30 min. each day to get to the city or to work (in the city). Living on the countryside has however some good parts too. Behind my house you can find a field full of young pine trees, which is pretty awesome looking at it when the sun sets...

As I was saying, riding to and from the city... pretty shitty, defenetly when you just had a real shitty day behind you. But in a rare case of events, you catch a glimp of something so beautiful and staggering which makes it all worth while.. and keeps you going...

When i was driving home after a late shift this week, I think it was the night of the 13 th, I was looking up to the sky just for a few seconds when i had the luck to spot a shooting star. How corny it may sound, I love shooting stars, it's something beyond our reach so far away and only viewable with the naked eye for a few seconds. This might be the most normal thing to you or who ever that is reading this, to me it meant so much more, it made me forget about the long day of work, put it all behind me, it made my fucking day!
I was happy I saw at least 1 shooting star, knowing that in the night of the 11th - 12 th - 13th of august there was the Perseïds rain, once a year, and the 2 nights before it was cloudy so no stars to be seen...

Thinking I've seen all the beauty of nature for one week, the next night whilst I was driving home I was listening to Amenra (get into this band!) or better said yet overwhelmd by their songs I cannot even comprehend. Taking my usual shortcut through the cornfields of my town I noticed their was a low bank of fog hanging over a field where I know a horse runs around these days, thinking he must've been sleeping in the stables or in the field because it was about 2 in the morning when I was driving home, all of the sudden whilst passing the field through the fog enlightend by the full moon you could see a dark shadow of a horse running around like crazy...

Taking all these together, amenra going through my head, the fog causing bad sight, the moonlight making it all so surreal, even though the horse was going so fast, all this was kind of happening in slow motion ... it was one of the weirdest craziest most beautiful things I've ever seen, and probably won't forget overnight.

The next day I took the same road to get to Ghent, and there was the horse, staring at me while I was staring at him until I disappeared along the curved road into the cornfields..
